Wood Gantry Crane

 Recommendations that pertain to the total procedure for making the wood Gantry crane are listed below.

1. Before drilling a hole, if you cannot place the center of the drill exactly at the center point mark, it is recommended that you use a circle template with the same diameter as the diameter of the drill bit.  Place the center point mark in the center of the circle template and draw a circle around the center point.  Make sure the drill bit cuts the area within the drawn circle.  This will insure that the center of the drilled hole coincides with the center point mark.

 

2. The caster used in the steps below has a vertical distance of 5-3/8” (distance from the bottom of the wheel to the top of the caster).   If you use a different height caster, adjust the vertical dimension of the legs accordingly.

 

The step-by-step procedure for making the wood Gantry crane is listed below.

1.  Make the base boards that are parallel to the floor on the left side and right side by gluing 2 wood boards, 2” x 6” x 25”.  Drill 3 holes across the width of one of the boards at the centerline of the 25” dimension.   Place glue on both boards and place one board on top of the other and align the edges of both boards and clamp the ends.  Drill through the holes to drill a hole in the second board, then place screws in the holes and screw them into the holes.  After 24 hours, remove the clamps and screws and cut the length to 24” to make the base boards 2” x 5-1/2” x 24”.  Mark one base board the left side and one base board the right side.

2.  Drill the holes for attaching the casters to the bottom at each end of the base boards.  The center of the caster is located at the intersection of a centerline of the 5-1/2” dimension of the base board and 2-1/4” from the end of the base board.  Place the center of the caster on the bottom of the base board at the above intersection and trace the outline of the holes on the bottom of the base board.   Drill a 1/4” diameter hole a depth of 2-1/2” at the center of the hole outlines for the 4 holes.  Repeat for the other 3 casters.

3.  Use a 2” x 4” and make 2 boards 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 17”.   For the board on the left side base, drill 4 holes, 1/8” diameter, approximately equally spaced through this board along a centerline of the 1-1/2” dimension.  Place this board on the left base board and make the outside edge of this board even with the outside edge of the base board.  The centerline of the 17” dimension of this board is coincident with the centerline of the 24” dimension of the base.   Drill 3/32” diameter holes through the holes in the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 17” board into the base.   Place 2-1/2” screws into the holes and screw the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 17” board to the base.  Repeat this procedure for the right base board.

4.  Cut the following boards:

4.1   Cut 6 boards from a 2” x 6” and make the boards, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21”, for the width beams.   Drill 3 holes, 1/8” diameter, in the ends of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” boards located 1” from the top and bottom and 2-3/4” from the top and bottom edges and all holes 3/4” from the end of the board.

4.2   Cut 4 boards from a 2” x 6” and make the boards, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 60”, for the legs.   Drill 2 holes, 3/8” diameter, in the top end of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 60” boards located 1-1/2” from each edge and 2-3/4” from the end.

4.3   Cut 2 boards from a 2” x 6” and make the boards, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 24”, for holding the hoist.  Drill a 1/2” diameter hole in the center of each board.  Drill 4 holes, 3/8” diameter, at these locations of each board:  intersection of a line 1-1/2” from the 24” dimension and 4” from the 5-1/2” dimension.  For 1 board, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 24”, drill 3 holes, 1/8” diameter, in the ends of the board located 1” from the top and bottom and 2-3/4” from the top and bottom edges and all holes 3/4” from the end of the board.   Repeat for the other end of the board and for the other board.

4.4   Cut 2 boards from a 2” x 6” and make the boards, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 86” for the beams for the length of the Gantry crane.  Drill 2 holes, 3/8” diameter, in the ends located 2-3/4” from the top and bottom edge and 1-1/2” and 4” from the end.

5.  Use a 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board for the left base board and drill 6 holes, 1/8” diameter, through this board approximately equally spaced and not in line with the screws in step (3) and along a line 3/4” from the bottom of this board.  The centerline of the 21” dimension of this board is coincident with the centerline of the 24” dimension of the base.  The bottom of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board is even with the bottom of the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 17” board.  Drill holes, 3/32” diameter, in the holes in the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board and into the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 17” board and screw 2-1/2” screws into the holes.   Repeat for the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21”board on the right base board.

6.  Place 2 of the legs, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 60”, on top of the left base at the ends of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” boards.  Clamp the base and the legs to make the base level and the legs vertical.   Place the outside of the legs even with the ends of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board.  Drill holes, 3/32” diameter, in the holes in the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board and into the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 60” board and screw 3” screws into the holes.   Repeat for the other end of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board and for the right base.

7.  Clamp the legs attached to the left base to make the legs vertical and place a 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board between the legs with the top of the board 32” from the bottom of the legs.    Place the outside of the legs even with the ends of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board.  Drill holes, 3/32” diameter, in the holes in the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board and into the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 60” board and screw 3” screws into the holes.   Repeat for the other end of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board and for the right base.

8.  Clamp the legs attached to the left base to make the legs vertical and place a 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board between the legs with the top of the board even with the top end of the legs.    Place the outside of the legs even with the ends of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board.  Drill holes, 3/32” diameter, in the holes in the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board and into the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 60” board and screw 3” screws into the holes.   Repeat for the other end of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 21” board and for the right base.

9.  Clamp the legs so that there is 75” distance between the inside of the legs (the distance between the left side and right side of the frame is 71”) and place a 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 86” board at the top, front of the legs.  Insert 5/16” x 3-1/2” bolts through the 2 holes at each end and tighten the bolts using light force.  Repeat for the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 86” board at the top, back of the legs. 

10.  Adjust the legs to make them perpendicular and tighten the bolts at the top of the legs using high force.

11.  Lay the Gantry crane on its side and attach the casters to the bottom of the base boards.  Use lag screws, 5/16” x 2-1/2”, and a 5/16” diameter washer and screw the lag screws into the drilled holes in the bottom of the base boards. 

12.  Place the Gantry crane in an upright position and recheck to make sure the legs are perpendicular and if not perpendicular, loosen the bolts and adjust the legs to make the legs perpendicular and tighten the bolts using high force.

13.  Place the board, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 24”, that has the 1/8” holes drilled on the ends on top of the center of the Gantry crane.  Drill holes, 3/32” diameter, in the holes in the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 24” board and into the 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 75” board and screw 3” screws into the holes.   Repeat for the other end of the 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 24” board.

14.  Place the other board, 1-1/2” x 5-1/2” x 24”, on top of the board in step (13) and place the 1/2” diameter eye bolt through the center holes and place a 1/2” washer and 1/2” nut on the end of the eye bolt and tighten the nut with low force.  Place 5/16” x 3-1/2” bolts through the holes to attach the boards and tighten with high force.  Tighten the nut on the eye bolt with high force.
